افتراضي Journal of Saudi Association of Languages and Translation (SAOLT)

Journal of
Saudi Association of Languages and Translation
(SAOLT)
A Transdisciplinary Biannual Refereed Journal
in Language, Translation and Literature

Some classical Arab lexicographic sources estimate that the number of meanings of the lexis /‘ayn/ in Arabic at about a hundred. Other more conservative sources, however, put it at around half of this estimation. The 14th century Arab jurisprudent, Baha’ al-Din al-Subki, composed a poem acclaiming his brother, Jamal al-Din al-Subki, drawing on the wealth of meaning of /‘ayn/ and lists 35 meanings of it. What is certain is that /‘ayn/ constitutes one of the biggest entries in the Arabic lexicon. Yet the most prominent meaning of it is the “eye” through which we see.

The choice of this title for the journal is deliberate. Its aims are as rich as the meaning of /‘ayn/. It takes a totally unprejudiced stand on research that takes language as its basic stuff. However, research of relevance to translation is encouraged, but also within this limit no particular area of translation studies is given precedence over another.
It remains that the most basic aim of the journal is intertwined with the basic meaning of /‘ayn/, i.e. being the “eye” through which we see.

Languages of publication in ‘Ayn
In line with ‘Ayn’s policy of openness and equality among languages, all languages are, in principle, accepted for publication. Yet, for abstraction purposes, all submissions must be accompanied with a detailed abstract in English.

Notes for authors
The editorial board will consider original contributions set within sound theoretical or methodological frameworks, provided the material presented is rigorous and relevant. Contributions should conform to the following:

· The length of contributions should normally be between 6000 and 8000 words.
· A soft copy must be submitted. Text should be a Microsoft Word 2000 document (or a more recent version). Authors are welcome to send their contributions by e-mail, formatted as a Word attachment. A PDF copy should also be sent for cross-checking.
· A brief C.V. relevant to the scope of the journal should be submitted detailing the full contact information of the author and their institutional affiliation. A four-lined pull-out highlighting the authors career is also to be included.
· In preparing submissions use internationally recognized, relevant style rules, particularly with regards to: quoting, referencing, footnoting, etc.
· The Library of Congress transliteration systems are to be followed.
· Submission of a contribution will be taken to imply that it has not been published or is not being considered for publication elsewhere.
· No ‘Ayn-published material is to be reprinted elsewhere without the editor-in-chief’s prior permission.

Book reviews: for cross-examination, reviewed publications are to be included. They will be returned upon request.

Profiles: profiles of the linguistic, translational or literary situation in a certain country, language, or culture are welcome.

Refereeing: ‘Ayn subscribes to the professional ethic of peer reviewing and scholarly integrity endorsed by quality journals in the fields with which it is concerned. All submissions are evaluated purely and strictly on the merits of their contribution to knowledge.

Translation permissions: ‘Ayn respects copy rights thus contributors must obtain permission for translated materials.

Proofs: a final draft of the contribution will be sent to the author for revision. Alterations of subject matter at this stage are inadmissible beyond a strictly limited extent.

Offprints: contributors will receive ten offprints of their contribution and five copies of the issue in which it appears.
